This Teaching Life #2: Murf.ai

People seem to be going crazy about AI these days and lots of it is hype.

Don’t get me wrong, I use chat GPT every day but I don’t really play with every single AI toy out there.

Sometimes I use Play.HT to create tracks for assignments and classroom use.

I think tools like CHATGPT and Play.HT combined can boost your performance in the ESL Classroom.

Let’s analyze a practical example of how

#1 Sentences about the Future

A common topic part of all English classes is sentences about the future, we use sentences about the future to speak about goals, short-term or long-term plans.

You can make sentences about the future using a wide range of tenses and expressions.

Students tend to make mistakes like these when it comes to simple future

  1. I will to start another major.
  2. I will exploring my professional options
  3. I will to getting a job
  4. I am will start a new business

When it comes to sentences with going to, students tend to make mistakes or errors like these:

  1. I going to buy a new car
  2. I am go to get married
  3. I am going to doing exercises
  4. I am going start a diet

We also use the present continuous to talk about the future

  1. I am do yoga next week
  2. I saving money for an apartment

This is an example of errors I sometimes come across

#3 Grammar Solution

If you want to fix these sentences you can do it yourself since the grammar isn’t that complicated or you can copy and let ChatGPT fix them for you.

I will to start another major.
I will exploring my professional options
I will to getting a job
I am will start a new business
I going to buy a new car
I am go to get married
I am going to doing exercises
I am going start a diet
I am do yoga next week
I saving money for an apartment

What you have to figure out is how to ask ChatGPT to do it which isn’t that complicated.

This is what I wrote:

fix the grammar in these sentences

And you will get your grammar checked and fixed

Do you think your sentences are a bit basic?

Maybe so

#4 Vocab Kitchen

If you think your sentences are way too basic and that you are not pushing yourself.

You can easily analyze your text using VocabKitchen and see if your sentences belong to a basic level, independent or proficient level.

#5 CHATGPT Getting Dumber

Sometimes you get what you want but sometimes ChatGPT leads to frustration

Some wonder if ChatGPT is getting dumber.

If you want CHATGPT to make these sentences a bit longer, this prompt will do the job

can you add one more idea to each sentence?

I will start another major.
I will explore my professional options.
I will get a job.
I will start a new business.
I am going to buy a new car.
I am going to get married.
I am going to do exercises.
I am going to start a diet.
I am going to do yoga next week.
I am saving money for an apartment.

You can be more specific so ChatGPT doesn’t give you something you don’t want:

can you add one more idea to each sentence and make sure each sentence has a maximum of 15 words, don't change the original sentence at all , don't make the sentences too corny?

I will start another major.
I will explore my professional options.
I will get a job.
I will start a new business.
I am going to buy a new car.
I am going to get married.
I am going to do exercises.
I am going to start a diet.
I am going to do yoga next week.
I am saving money for an apartment.

You will get something like this:

I will start another major and broaden my academic horizons.
I will explore my professional options while networking with industry experts.
I will get a job and contribute to my chosen field's growth.
I will start a new business, aiming for innovation and success.
I am going to buy a new car that suits my needs.
I am going to get married and celebrate with loved ones.
I am going to do exercises regularly for better health.
I am going to start a diet while focusing on balanced nutrition.
I am going to do yoga next week, embracing mindfulness and flexibility.
I am saving money for an apartment, planning for future stability.

Obviously you can better those sentences if you want to sound more like you:

I will start another major and expand my academic horizons.
I will explore my professional options while networking with industry experts.
I will get a job and contribute to my field.
I will start a new business, aiming for innovation and success.
I am going to buy a new car that suits my needs.
I am going to get married and celebrate with family and friends.
I am going to do exercises regularly for better health.
I am going to start a diet while focusing on balanced nutrition.
I am going to do yoga next week, to find peace and stress relief.
I am saving money for an apartment to finally have stability and independence.

If we check those sentences out with VocabKitchen, you could show yourself that your sentence is less basic:

#6 Pronunciation and Murf.ai

If you understand phonetic transcriptions, you can ask CHATGPT to transcribe them phonetically using this request:

can you transcribe these sentences phonetically using the international phonetic alphabet:

In case you find phonetic transcriptions too difficult to understand, you can use Murf.ai

You can also use Chrome Audio Capture in case you run out of options to download your file.

This way, you can listen to the sentences and be ready to get a good idea of pronunciation.
