Exercise: Good or Bad Situations

This is an activity to promote speaking in the classroom

Follow these instructions

  1. Make groups of 4
  2. One person is the conversation manager
  3. The rest of the member are either Partner A, Partner B or Partner C

This is an example of how this conversation is gonna go:

Conversation ManagerMegan, What do you think about situation #1
Partner AI think situation #1 is a terrible situation
Conversation ManagerI totally agree with you

This is an example about how conversation is gonna go

Conversation ManagerHello Megan, What’s wrong?
Partner AI couldn’t finish the project on time
Conversation ManagerThat sucks

Situations

Partner A

  1. I deleted an important file from my computer
  2. I couldn’t finish the project on time
  3. I got a new job
  4. I couldn’t close a sale
  5. I have a Database Management class and I am 100% clueless

Partner B

  1. I have an angry boss
  2. I got promoted
  3. I have a new office
  4. I had a problem with my boss
  5. I have paid vacations

Partner C

  1. I finished my project on time
  2. We have to work on Christmas
  3. I can attend to my sister’s wedding
  4. I got accepted in Harvard
  5. I can’t go to my son’s graduation

Recommendations

Follow these recommendations when having a conversation with your partner

  • Use expressions such as what do you think about #1?
  • Respond with an expression such as I think #1 is a good situation when a situation is good
  • Respond with an expression such as I think #2 is a bad situation when a situation is bad
  • Say I agree with you or I don’t agree with you
